The World of English Language

By: Victor Perez Muciño

In this very fast moving world that we live in, news travel from one continent to the other in a matter of seconds. That situation is setting the need of having more, better, and efficient communicators in every aspect of life, as in the economic, political, cultural, and social between others.

As the world has emerged as a globalized one, so the need to establish a language to make business, to speak about politics and more. In this context English has become the dominant international language regarding communications, science, aviation, entertainment, radio and diplomacy, in short is the language of globalization.

David Crystal, English language expert.
According to English language expert David Crystal, more people speak English than any other language, and non-native speakers now outnumber native speakers by three to one. He also mentions that by the end of 2010, the number of adult English speakers in Asia had reached 350 million. And according to the British Council, in ten years’ time 2 billion people will study English and about half the world’s population will speak it. Surprising right?  And this is the world in which we are immersed.

The media matters to everyone, politicians, celebrities, teachers, managers, doctors, parents, students, etc. We all depend on the need of being informed of what happens around us. The majority of the most important broadcasting companies, radio stations, news papers, magazines, are transmitted or  printed in English, some multinational companies like Samsung and LG. Philips, have started moving towards an English-only email policy.

Technology is also a big factor in all this change; studies mention that 80% of the world’s electronic information is stored in English.

We as teachers of “Bachillerato en Comunicación José Ramón Fernández” are totally committed to transmit the idea of this globalized world to our students and give them the necessary tools to help them to become more competitive, professional, and be well prepared to face these very important changes. Our students always embrace the opportunity they have to learn English to become more effective communicators both in their personal lives and in their carriers, I have no doubt that this is a great opportunity they have which will open them up a lot of more doors that would not be open without the knowledge of the English language.
